van fixed!

on our way to burlington VT we started having van problems... the van
would just stall out when idling / in 1st gear... it got progressively
worse... a nice mechanic in burlington gave it a look but at the time
it seemed more minor since it had only happened twice in a row and
then hadn't continued, was fine up until montreal... in toronto it got
a lot worse and by the time we got it to syracuse it was barely
starting at all.

first thing saturday, i took it to a friend of our friends (Thanks
James Pigg at Goodyear!) - at the goodyear service center in downtown
syracuse. he looked over it for a while and suggested GMC/Chevy
dealers. i drove around to a few for a few hours - (liverpool, east
syracuse, etc - couldnt turn the van off) driving with the engine
cover off is crazy hot, but no one was open or could help me with the
diesel (everyone was extremely nice) finally i found Diesel Dick's in
the phone book, and begged him to have a look. aside from it taking a
while (like 5 hours) - i also had him do some routine maintenance
stuff while troubleshooting the problem, so now everything is tip top
and we now have working A/C!!!

the problem (as dave who did the conversion speculated and told me to
change) was with the fuel injector module (computer)

here's an email i sent out about this too that may overlap with what
i've said already:

when dave converted it he installed his own fuel injector module
(computer) - which i guess gets insanely hot... so he put it under the
front bumper and it hangs down and the heat sync on it catches the air
from driving... this kind of makes sense, especially since the problem
was only when idling / in 1st gear... (no real wind blowing on it) i
think it eventually really burned out though since it wouldnt even
start most of the time... luckily i finally stumbled upon "Diesel
Dick's" in the phone book and he said he'd take a look.... it took us
a while to find the problem but i also had him do some routine things
in the meantime too... i was there like 5 hours and it only cost us
$585 so i feel like i got a pretty awesome deal, plus i got to watch /
help so i learned a ton. anyway the problem was actually a very simple
fix, since dave had installed his own module, the stock one was still
intact. - funny thing is, when i called dave about it, he told me to
move the electrical wiring and connect it back to the old one, just
needed to remove the engine cover... when i actually saw Dick do it,
there was NO WAY i could have done it myself without knowing where it
was before hand... i mean i guess maybe it is in the Haynes manual i
have, but it was a lot deeper in the engine than the impression i
had... but anyway once we plugged in the old module everything is
fine. the engine's setup must have a great way of cooling it... and
that was Dick's main complaint with wvo conversions and basically any
car modifications in general, if you are gonna make any mods, you
better be 100% certain you have everything thought out and covered or
there will certainly be problems.

dicks was near downtown syracuse, so then i picked everyone up and we
hightailed it to Cleveland. Cleveland was great to us! we were
originally booked to play an earlier show... but due to our
problems, they moved the whole show to a different venue: The Tower...
we arrived around 10:40 and a band called Red Handed from california
was playing. they were real good from the one song i caught. it was
amazing that we got to play after getting there so late.
we set up and played and people went crazy. there was some drama
outside too: greg from massakari's car window got broken which was
just related to some lame thug from the neighborhood starting shit or
something. anyway, massakari / rid the world peeps took us to taco
bell... i guess that's cleveland's vegan eats at 1 am. there were 3
awesome pitbulls at the house by the time my food coma took over. see
chris' pics.

on to grand rapids! listened to the no tolerance demo 3 times in a row.

peace,
-pv
